Why Grade Your Stuff
Raw numbers →
Scout language.
Velocity, spin and movement numbers only mean something in context. The 20–80 scale translates your raw metrics into the language scouts and college coaches actually use.
See which pitch in your arsenal is closest to its ceiling and which one has the most room to develop — so training time goes where it moves the needle most.
Re-grade after a training block to track objective progress over time — same scale, same benchmarks, no guesswork.
Methodology & Limitations
How the grades are calculated

Benchmark sources. MLB comparisons use league-average velocity, spin rate, induced vertical break and horizontal break by pitch type, derived from published MLB Statcast data. Collegiate (“D1”) comparison values are internal TopVelocity estimates informed by publicly reported collegiate pitch data — they are approximations for training context, not an official collegiate dataset.

Supported pitches and metrics. Eight pitch types (4-seam fastball, sinker, cutter, changeup, slider, sweeper, curveball, splitter) across four metrics: velocity (mph), spin rate (rpm), induced vertical break and horizontal break (inches).

How grades are calculated. Your entered numbers are compared with the benchmark averages for your pitch type, and the distance from average (scaled by typical spread) is mapped onto a 20–80-style scale where 50 represents the benchmark average. The exact weighting is TopVelocity’s own implementation of this standard scouting convention.

Limitations. Grades are calculated from self-entered numbers, so measurement device, capture conditions and entry accuracy affect results. Benchmarks are adult professional averages and collegiate estimates — they are not age-adjusted, and a youth pitcher’s grade reflects distance from pro/college benchmarks, not peer ranking. Grades are educational estimates for training context — not official scouting evaluations, recruiting assessments, or medical evaluations of any kind.
